The third annual Shelley Joseph-Kordell Award and Scholarship Ceremony was held on Friday, October 26, 2007 to honor the life of Shelley Joseph-Kordell and to recognize the award winner for commitment and dedication to the elderly.

The program featured:

  • Master of Ceremonies Warren Wolfe, Staff Writer for the Star Tribune
  • Keynote Speaker Peter Wyckoff, Former Executive Director, MN Senior Federation - Metro Region

2007

Kris Orluck, Senior Coordinator for the Maple Grove Parks and Recreation Board received the third Shelley Joseph-Kordell Award, established to recognize dedicated professionals and agencies that assist seniors as they make life transitions.  Over ten years ago, Ms. Orluck initiated and launched the Maple Grove Senior Program, which provides education, fitness, creativity, social and recreational program to nearly 28,000 seniors annually.  Maplewood, Minn. resident Mary Dierich received the third Shelley Joseph-Kordell Scholarship, which is awarded to a graduate student at the University of Minnesota who has committed to working directly with seniors. A Ph.D student in nursing, Dierich has been caring for elders for her entire career starting as a nurse’s aide in a local nursing home way back in 1972.  Her research interest is the effect housing and access to care have on the ability of elders to remain in their homes as they age.

Advocates

Gregg Getchell and Joe Guertin created the Emerald Crest concept in 1998. Their collective interest and mission was to create an innovative model of senior housing and care for individuals with memory challenges. This model is based on both research and actual working experience which demonstrates how care for seniors with memory challenges is best accomplished: in smaller, home-like residences where one's dignity, privacy, safety and quality of life can be preserved. By complementing this environment with a unique cognitive care program administered by Registered Occupational Therapists and support staff, Emerald Crest offers seniors and their families a refreshing new option as an alternative to nursing home placement or large "institutional" settings.  The locally owned and operated Emerald Crest homes are specifically designed and staffed to provide a superior cognitive care program for its memory challenged residents.
